Cessna Citation Sovereign empennage

Until 2000, US general-aviation manufacturer Cessna Aircraft had for almost 75 years been self-sufficient in producing each important major structural part for its range of personal and business aircraft. But after being invited to bid on production of the empennage for the medium-size Sovereign model in the Citation business-jet range Stork Fokker has become a partner in the programme.

Stork Fokker supported Cessna in designing the empennage (or complete tail unit), made the tooling and now manufactures the part which, after completion, is shipped to Cessna's facilities in Wichita-Kansas and mounted on to the aircraft at the final-assembly line.

Outsourcing of the empennage has allowed Cessna to re-allocate internal resources, while the partnership with Stork Fokker has increased capacity that is not limited to the Sovereign model.

Now, the two companies are considering other ways to further develop the co-operation. Cessna and Stork Fokker exploit their individual strengths and perhaps new materials and processes could be applied on other Cessna aircraft programmes.
